Linux 6.1 Release Candidate Linus Torvalds har officiellt startat utvecklingscykeln för den kommande Linux 6.1-kärnserien och tillkännagav idag den allmänna tillgängligheten för offentlig testning av den första milstolpen för Release Candidate (RC).
Den största nya funktionen i Linux 6.1 skulle vara sammanslagning av Rust-infrastrukturkoden. Men även om detta låter väldigt spännande för vissa Rust-utvecklare där ute, är det bara en mycket grundläggande implementering av stöd för programmeringsspråket Rust som inte kan användas för verkliga användningsfall för tillfället.
En annan sak att nämna här är det faktum att eftersom detta kommer att vara årets sista stora Linux-kärnutgåva, borde det också vara nästa LTS (Long-Term Support)-serie, enligt den kända kärnutvecklaren Greg Kroah-Hartman.

Efter att ha varit under utveckling i två månader är Linux-kärnan 6.0 äntligen här och introducerar stöd för AArch64 (ARM64) hårdvaruarkitektur för att byta genomskinliga enorma sidor utan att dela upp dem, stöd för NVMe in-band-autentisering, stöd för PCI-bussar i OpenRISC och LoongArch-arkitekturer, asynkron buffrad skrivning när man använder både XFS och io_uring, samt stöd för io_uring zero-copy nätverksöverföring.
Linux-kärnan 6.0 ger också stöd för ”Zicbom”-tillägget till RISC-V-hårdvaruarkitekturen för hantering av enheter med icke-cache-koherent DMA, ett nytt runtime-verifieringsundersystem som tillåter övervakning av kärntillstånd, stöd för att generera nya CXL-minnesregioner, stöd för korrekt implementering av POSIX-åtkomstkontrollistor på OverlayFS-filsystem, och implementering av den andra generationen av Btrfs ”send”-protokoll som stöder sändning av stora data och råkomprimerade omfattningar.
Andra anmärkningsvärda ändringar inkluderar nya minneshanteringsfunktioner för användarutrymme i DAMON-mekanismen, stöd för att begränsa NFSv4-servern till 1024 aktiva klienter vid 1 GB RAM, stöd för EXT4-filsystemet för att hämta och ställa in UUID lagrade i ett filsystems superblock, stöd för fsnotify-undersystemet för att bättre kontrollera ignorerade händelser, stöd för sömnbara BPF-program kopplade till uprober, såväl som nya rapporter till perf-verktyget för låsning av konfliktspårpunkter och BPF för aggregering i kärnan.
Det finns också goda nyheter för virtualisering eftersom Linux-kärnan 6.0 introducerar en ny pseudoenhet som heter ”gäst vCPU-stoppdetektor” som kan fungera som en vakthund för att tala om för värden om den virtuella datorn har stannat. Det finns också ett nytt debugfs-gränssnitt, en ny BPF-iterator, en ny uppsättning BPF-kfuncs, nya BPF-hjälpare för att generera och kontrollera SYN-cookies, och en ny io_uring-baserad drivrutin för användarutrymmesblock i Linux 6.0.
